This Week's ELA: Short-O and Long-O; The BFG Week 3; IRA #1


3.06 Spelling: Short- and Long-O                                                    

BONUS Practice/extra credit (due Thursday on your own paper OR through Google Docs*): 
Choice 1: Three Times Each (MUST be on your own paper)
Choice 2: Spell and Draw* (Write each word & draw an appropriate picture/symbol to explain the word meaning.)
Choice 3: Spelling Sort* (Sort and write your words into two categories, short-o and long-o sounds.)
Choice 4: Alphabetical Order*
Choice 5: Word + 1* (Find another word that matches the sound and spelling pattern.  Write both words.
Example: coach / roach)

*These choices can be created in Google Docs and then SHARE with hdyer@ucschools.org (and check CAN EDIT).

Monday: Which are the 5 hardest words for you to spell?  Write them correctly in your agenda in the box on the bottom right.  Practice and study these words.  (Start on bonus practice if completing.)
Tuesday: Write the rest of your spelling words correctly in your agenda.  Study all 15 words.  (Work on bonus.)
Wednesday: Study all 15 words and previous weeks’ words.  Finish bonus (if completing).
Thursday: Study all 15 words and previous weeks’ words!  If possible, take a practice test (either on paper or at www.spellingcity.com.) 

*Your test on Friday will have 20 words.  The “extra” five will be selected from previous weeks’ words.

The short-o vowel sound is the vowel you hear in hop.
The long-o vowel sound is what you hear in open.

Vocabulary: The BFG (Week 3)

BONUS Practice/extra credit (due Thursday on your own paper OR through Google Docs*):
Choice 1: Make flashcards.
Choice 2: Make a Quizlet with the words and definitions (http://quizlet.com).
Choice 3*: Write each word in an original super sentence.
Choice 4*: Write a story using all of the vocabulary words.  It can be silly, but it must make sense.

Monday: Use the word bank to match each word to its definition.  Begin bonus if completing.
Tuesday-Thursday: Study for Friday’s test.  Your test will use each word in a sentence (in context) and will include words from previous weeks.
Wednesday: Finish bonus if completing.

IRA (Independent Reading Activity): DUE FRIDAY!
            You may complete your IRA on your own paper or in Google Docs (Change UNTITLED DOCUMENT to IRA301.LastF which means last name first initial.  Mine would be saved as IRA301.DyerH.  When you are ready to submit, click the blue SHARE button at the top right, enter Mrs. Dyer’s email address hdyer@ucschools.org and check “Can Edit,” and then click DONE.)
            Write (or type) your complete heading (title is IRA 301).  Respond to the following questions in complete sentences.  Consider writing a paragraph instead of only answering the questions.  What book are you currently reading?  Who is the author?  Is your book fiction or nonfiction?  How do you know?  Use evidence from the text to support your response.  Tell the highlights of the book so far. 
            You may add an illustration if you’d like, but an illustration is not required.

Grammar Focus:     subject/predicate, nouns/verbs, complete sentences, paragraph writing

Reading Focus: The BFG (fiction/fantasy); character development and plot

Bring in a clean, clear plastic jar with lid by Tuesday!

September 13 is Roald Dahl Day!  Dress up as your favorite Roald Dahl character!
