3.35 Spelling/Vocabulary

First, the only "real" homework for Monday, 5/8, is to read your hero book if you haven't already.  All school library books are due tomorrow, so you really need to read about your hero tonight.  Thank you!

The only other homework this week is to study the review spelling & vocabulary words.  I recommend going through and focusing on the ones that are difficult for you, not the ones you already easily know.  Not all of the words will be on the test Tuesday.

5/12   Social Studies Workbook chapter 12, Thurgood Marshall, must be completed by Friday.  You will have class time to work on it.  
5/12   Last day to turn in Box Tops for this school year!
5/16   Field Day (afternoon)
5/17   Arrive at school at 7:30-7:55 and go straight to the classroom for breakfast.  If you are tardy, you will MISS THE FIELD TRIP!  Our bus will be leaving promptly at 8 AM.  DO NOT BE LATE!  We are going to the Chattanooga Aquarium & IMAX Theater (Pick up students at 4:30!  No afternoon bus transportation home!)

3.31 Spelling: Prefixes over- and super-
Write your words in your agenda Monday.  Spelling bonuses are due no later than Thursday.  Be sure to know the meaning of each word and how to spell it correctly.
            You will choose your own bonus word(s) this week.  What other words use these prefixes?  Your test will be Friday (20 words total).

Vocabulary: ELA Milestones Key Terms
            Not only do you need to know what these words mean, but you will also need to apply them to reading passages.  Your test will be Friday.

1.     summarize:  to give the main events of a story in the order in which they happen
2.     inference/infer: to infer means to come to a reasonable conclusion based on evidence found in the text
3.     compare: looking for, analyzing, and describing similarities
4.     contrast: looking for, analyzing, and describing differences
5.     simile: a comparison between two unlike things using linking words such as “like,” “as,” or “than.”  (Her shirt was as green as the grass.)
6.     metaphor: a comparison without a linking word (The snow was a white blanket covering the ground.)
7.     chapter: a section of a book
8.     stanza: a section of a poem
9.     scene: a section of a drama or play
