Vocabulary: Nonfiction Text Features

As we continue to read nonfiction, it is important to understand the different features, or parts, of the text.  You are responsible for finding out what each of these terms mean.  For your test on Friday, not only will you need to know the definition of each term, but you will also be given pictures to identify the various terms.  (For example, you would need to identify a picture of map as a map.)

IRA: Dialogue & Quotation Marks

            Writers make their stories interesting by having characters talk to each other.  Choose a passage to copy correctly that uses quotation marks.  Underline what the speakers actually say (the part in quotation marks) with different colors for different speakers.  For example, if Charlotte and Wilbur were talking, you might underline Charlotte’s words in black and Wilbur’s words in pink.

You may complete this IRA on your own paper or as a Google Doc (due by Friday).

IRA: Summarizing Your Book

            Each evening, write a paragraph to tell about what you read that day.  Your entries will be for Wednesday (1/4), Thursday, Friday, Saturday OR Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  You can write your daily summary paragraph on your own paper or as a Google Doc to be shared by Friday, 1/13.  You will have a total of EIGHT paragraphs (one for each day).

            Each day, write the book title and page numbers you read.  It’s okay if you finish your book and need to start a new one.  You can use the following chart if you’d like:

Spooky Stories

We worked last week and yesterday in small groups to write spooky stories.  Students had to roll cubes to get their character, setting, problem, and story starter.  Here are a few of their (unedited) results.  I hope you enjoy!

Story #1:
One dark scary night there was a werewolf that lived in the woods.He liked to eat humans. One day the wolf scratched  on a human`s door.Before the man opened the door the wolf transformed into a cute puppy.Then the man opened the door he saw the puppy. He went ‘’Aww.” Then…..The werewolf transformed back to a werewolf and ate him! He had a very nice breakfast. THen he went back home. DUN DUN DUUUUN!!!!!!!!!!! The werewolf lived in its den and had a happy life!THE END!!!

Story #2: 
A old man was abandoned in the woods.He came across a old tree it fell on top of him. He had his mouth open when the tree fell on him. Then he said it tasted like bark. Then he found a old abandoned house. He went  in the house and the door slammed shut. He went into the basement. Then  he heard a weird noise.  There was blood splattered everywhere. Then he died and he was never seen again.     The end

Story #3: 
It was a dark and stormy night, when the moon was at its highest Shemie stumbled across an old castle. The castle was very damp and run-down. She heard some low growling as she entered the castle. As she went up the stairs, the stairs creaked under her weight. She headed towards the sound she had heard earlier. Creeeeeeeeeeeak!!!! The sound almost scared Shemie to death. When Shemie turned around she saw that the door had mysteriously closed behind her, SLAM!!!! Once again she heard the mysterious noise, roooooooar!!! She headed back towards the front door to find it locked. She was trapped!! Just as she was going to scream she heard footsteps. They sounded like they belonged to a monster. STOMP STOMP STOMP!!! As she turned around, her curiosity turned to horror. There in front of her was an ugly beast! Shemie screamed, and ran for her life. As she reached the end of the hallway she nearly passed out at the sight in front of her. The monster was too fast!!! Shemie knew it was going to outrun her, but she had to try it. Shemie ran fast enough to get the monster stuck in a hole in the stairs. Meanwhile, her parents were getting worried and called the police. They soon started a search hunt.  But back in the castle Shemie was running out of time, the monster had escaped and she was out of ideas, except for one little idea. She went to the door and looked in the weapon cupboard until she found a spear. She went to hide in the closet for the monster. Just then the door closed in front of her! She heard a noise in the clothes, RUSTLE RUSTLE. All she remembered after that was pitch black. By the time the police found the castle it was day. They broke in and got in the closet and found the dead girl. Little did they know that she would haunt them forever!!

Story #4:

Hi I am Izzy and my best friend’s name is Alice. Alice went to my house for a sleepover.Alice and I were going to sleep in the basement.I heard a case open “creeeeek”.And I got I got tooken by a mummy and it said “roaaar”.And it grabbed me and it took me to its lyar.

Alice worried about me and went to go see where I was.

As Alice walked by she saw that the mummy case was open.Alice heard me  yelling ohhhhh nooooo!Alice came running for help.Then Alice busted the door down and said “Izzy I’m here to save you”.Alice I don’t need saving .Alice this is Oyster the mummy..But but you yelled ohhhhh nooooo.Alice I yelled ohhhhh nooooo because I lost the card game.Then why did you get tooken by Oyster?I got tooken by Oyster because he got a new deck of cards and wanted to play with me.Do you want to play Alice?Sure said Alice.

                                       The End

Election Extra Credit

To help students better understand the election process and the responsibility of voting, I am encouraging parents or another trusted adult to take their child with them to vote as an extra credit social studies opportunity.  To receive credit, after walking through the actual voting process, they are to write a paragraph explaining the process and what they experienced.  They do NOT need to include who ballots were cast for but rather explain the process from beginning to end.

Please include/explain at least one issue or race at the national, state, and local level.

Since early voting has already begun, students have until November 8 to observe the voting process (if possible).  Their paragraphs are due no later than Wednesday, Nov. 9.  They may be handwritten or submitted through Google Docs.
