This Week's ELA: Long Oo/U & BFG Week 4


3.07 Spelling: Long Oo/U                                                                HD3/JC3

BONUS Practice/extra credit (due Thursday on your own paper OR through Google Docs*): 
Choice 1: Three Times Each (MUST be on your own paper)
Choice 2: Spell and Draw* (Write each word & draw an appropriate picture/symbol to explain the word meaning.)
Choice 3: Alphabetical Order*

*These choices can be created in Google Docs.  Save as SpellingBonus307.LastF (so mine would be saved as SpellingBonus307.DyerH).  When you are ready to submit, click the blue SHARE button at the top right, enter Mrs. Dyer’s email address hdyer@ucschools.org and check “Can Edit,” and then click DONE.

Monday: Which are the 5 hardest words for you to spell?  Write them correctly in your agenda in the box on the bottom right.  Practice and study these words.  (Start on bonus practice if completing.)
Tuesday: Write the rest of your spelling words correctly in your agenda.  Study all 15 words.  (Work on bonus.)
Wednesday: Study all 15 words and previous weeks’ words.  Finish bonus (if completing).
Thursday: Study all 15 words and previous weeks’ words!  If possible, take a practice spelling test (either on paper or at www.spellingcity.com.) 

*Your test on Friday will have 20 words.  The “extra” five will be selected from previous weeks’ words.

IRA (Independent Reading Activity): Compare & Contrast: Character & You
            Create a Venn diagram (two interlocking circles) on your own paper to compare and contrast a character in your book to yourself.  In what ways are you alike?  How are you different from each other?  Consider including how you would react in events in the story compared to how the character actually reacts.  Please include at least five thoughtful comparisons.
            Your IRA is due on Friday.

           

Vocabulary: The BFG (Week 4)

BONUS Practice/extra credit (due Thursday on your own paper OR through Google Docs*):
Choice 1: Make flashcards.
Choice 2: Make a Quizlet with the words and definitions (http://quizlet.com).
Choice 3*: Write each word in an original super sentence.
Choice 4*: Write a story using all of the vocabulary words.  It can be silly, but it must make sense.

Monday-Thursday: Study your words and definitions.  Begin bonus if completing.  Your test will use each word in a sentence (in context) and may include words from previous weeks.
Wednesday: Finish bonus if completing.

1.     obvious: a fact that is very clear and does not need explaining

2.     famished: very hungry

3.     tinge: a little bit of color

4.     desolate: without any plants, animals, or people

5.     murky: cloudy or hard to see through

6.     murmur: to speak very softly


Grammar Focus:     subject/predicate, nouns/verbs, complete sentences, paragraph writing

Reading Focus: The BFG (fiction/fantasy); character development and plot; similes

*Monday, September 26 is Parent/Teacher Conference Day (no school for students)!  If you did not sign up for a conference and would like one, please let us know.  We will probably have to schedule you for a different day as most slots are full on the 26th.  Thanks for understanding.
